If you are painting still lives, you’ve got to thanks your fruit and vases. If you are painting landscapes, then rivers, trees, fields, and old buildings are owed their due. And if you are doing figure drawing or portraits, then you have to appreciate your models.
I do not know if this is typical or atypical of other cities, but here in St. Louis we have a good number of really dynamic figure models. They are mostly women, but there are a few good men in the mix as well. And while it is not always the case, I find that usually I do my best work when I’m working with a model who is really into modeling and who has a strong personality. A model’s personality really does come out in how she holds her body, where her weight is flowing, and how her face is set.
Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to draw women who are artists as well, whether as musicians, actresses, or painters-drawers, and I think they are dynamite, too.
So, thank you to all you models. My imagination is not nearly as good as your reality.
