I recently complete a semester of drawing at the St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. I had known for awhile that there were some fine artists teaching in the SLCC system. I am now confident that they are fine art teachers as well.
The class was a combined Drawing I and Drawing II studio class that ran for just under six hours every Saturday. I took the course because I felt I would benefit from it, and I did. I really missed my Saturdays, but I really enjoyed the class. The instructor, Michael Paradise, has been teaching the Saturday class for years. He truly does it for the love of the art.
I feel my drawing improved markedly over the course of the semester. So did Jing, my wife.
I was especially impressed by the progress that my classmates experienced. Some of the Drawing I students came to the class with no drawing experience and unsure whether they even could draw. By the end of the semester there as no doubt that they could draw, and some of their drawing were truly beautiful.
I also learned that taking a single SLCC class brings with it some unexpected financial benefits. So long as you are enrolled, you have free use of the entire Microsoft Office 365 Suite. Pretty sweet. Also, you get a no-charge pass on Metro for the semester. Unlimited rides on MetroLink and MetroBus, which normally costs $80 per month. Tres cool.
Here are a couple of the works I completed in this class this semester:
